Why I mostly avoid social media
I avoid most social media for personal use because it asks us to give up too much agency. Highly optimised algorithms exploit evolutionary vulnerabilities in our social instincts, gradually shaping what gets our attention and reducing our ability to choose what we actually want.
I’m not against using these platforms for business. For personal use, though, I would caution people to think twice about whether the convenience is worth surrendering that much control.
X is my exception. I use it less as conventional social media and more as a discussion group and public town hall: a place to curate who I hear from, understand the zeitgeist, and follow the latest progress in my field.
